Folding Light

Creator: Florence Grace-Castonguay
Supervisor: Peter Yeadon

Cyan photoluminescent powder was mixed with translucent silicone in a proportion of 3% by weight. This material was then poured into 15 cm x 15 cm molds to cure. Each sheet had a different thickness: 1 mm, 3 mm and 5 mm. After placing the sheets under a table lamp for 1 minute, the sheets were placed in a dark environment and folded onto themselves.
The thickest sheet was the brightest but the light emitted was not amplified by the folding. The thinnest sheet was the least bright when flat, but the overlap of the material made it significantly brighter. When placed flat one next to each other, there is a visible difference between the quantity of light emitted, but that difference diminished when they were rolled up.
