(In)Conspicuous Protest Wear

Creator: Daudi Nabaasa
Supervisor: Peter Yeadon

This materials-driven study conceives of a new form of protest wear, where subtle imagery and words appear to convey a message that addresses a key issue in society. As an example, the project message focused on the #MeToo movement, where celebrities have attended formal, public events and protested sexual harassment in their industry.

A tux was designed, with the fabric printed with thermochromics. Once the wearer appears on the red carpet, heat from stage lighting activates the pigment to reveal the hidden messages. Direct physical contact with others could also activate the thermochromic inks, and cause the message to appear.
