		<description>

“The design of matter should
matter to designers.”&#38;nbsp;
Peter Yeadon&#38;nbsp;
RISD CATALYST&#38;nbsp;is a group of students and collaborators who engage in materials-driven innovation at the Rhode Island School of Design. As such, our cross-disciplinary work pursues new ways of making and knowing, which is a vital part of RISD’s strategic plan, NEXT. The group is led by Professor Peter Yeadon.
RISD CATALYST participants invent new applications for advanced materials with novel properties, such as biomaterials, smart materials, and nanomaterials. Many of the substances that we explore are designed to respond to certain stimuli, such as temperature and light, so our projects tend to be dynamic and adapt to change.

RISD CATALYST collaborators have included individuals, companies, and organizations, such as: URI Soft Matter Lab, SPARK IP, Mearthane Products Corporation, Performance Indicators / Canopy Defense, University of Rochester, NYU Langone Medical Center, NBBJ New York, Rogers Corporation, G-Form, PolyWorks, Pvilion, University of Edinburgh, Lumin Sensors, Wilson Center for Scholars, and Yeadon Space Agency.

This project was developed within an interdisciplinary advanced design studio at RISD that offered an opportunity for students to experiment with responsive biomaterials, meet some experts, tackle the problem of water scarcity, and develop innovative climate solutions for tall buildings in arid regions. As a partnership between the departments of Architecture and Industrial Design, teams of students designed and prototyped some working atmospheric water generators (AWG), and some tall buildings that the AWGs were designed to be a part of. Building on the United Nations’ recognition of water as a human right and UN Sustainable Development Goals, the studio responded to global challenges of water scarcity caused by climate change, drought, and declining freshwater resources.
Harvesting Facade proposes a climate-responsive tall building for Dubai that integrates atmospheric water generation (AWG) into its architectural framework. A network of vertical cable structures supports modular AWG units across the façade, enabling the passive capture of moisture from the air and its conversion into usable water. In doing so, the building operates as a self-sustaining system that responds directly to its environment.&#38;nbsp;

The harvested water is redistributed throughout the tower to support a series of ecological and public programs, including an elevated garden and a long landscaped bridge that connects pedestrians to neighboring skyscrapers and ends at the Museum of the Future. Together, these elements form a continuous green infrastructure, introducing vegetation, shade, and microclimates into an otherwise harsh desert context.

Conceived as both a landmark and an environmental system, the project engages with wind, humidity, and light as active design parameters. By integrating modular AWG technology into architectural form, the tower establishes a symbiotic relationship between built and natural systems, offering a model for how tall buildings can contribute to environmental resilience while enhancing public experience.

Pleated Pleats positions the pleat as a structural and environmental instrument, an active mediator between structure and skin in a 1500-foot atmospheric water tower in Abu Dhabi. Five bundled tube-structures rise as infrastructural trunks, mimicking the aerial root systems of local mangroves. The structure of each split tube is outbound: the split tubes’ column grid meets the core at different elevations.

Concept design sketches for the tall building in Abu Dhabi that harvests atmospheric water

At ground level, the space between the tubes is shaded outdoor space. When separate, the tubes take on individual, varying programs: a library, a market, a salon, a boxing ring- up to the 23rd floor. At their convergence, each floor is a compound live/work program to promote contact between different users. The convergence and torque capture and accelerate prevailing winds, transforming the tower into a vertical wind guide. At the base, a wide-span cable net establishes a ground condition with the surrounding neighborhood. As the structure ascends, this net thickens and transitions into a pleated double-skin façade hosting the atmospheric water generator.

The water generator’s design was formally inspired by the skyscraper's tapering geometry, with the heated surfaces on the interior pleated like the tower’s facade to increase surface area of absorption. Housed in the double skin facade, on one side are nitinol springs that can open or close the system for absorption and condensation stages. On the other side is a panel to let draft air out when the system is absorbing.&#38;nbsp;

When the system is condensing, both panels will close and the pleated surfaces that the super hygroscopic polymer films (SHPF) are laminated to will begin to heat. As the pleated surface heats, a fan sends cold air through a copper tube at the very top of the model.

The hot, moist air evaporating from the SHPF will come into contact with the tube at the top, condense on that surface, and run down the gutter into a drainage tube and back into the tower. The material choices for the model were not only functional, but meant to remain consistent with the materials and color palette used within the other models.

Oasis

Creators: R. Jesse Baltazar, Anna Crookston, Camilla Radoyce, Anthony Zhang

Supervisors: Jonathan Knowles &#38;amp; Peter Yeadon

The Oasis project evolved through multiple iterations, beginning with an exploration of minimalist form inspired by Bird in Space by Constantin Brâncuși. Early studies examined reductive geometries and structural clarity, leading to the development of a buttressed core system organized through triangular patterns. This strategy provided internal stability while enabling the emergence of more organic, expressive forms. The triangular logic, influenced by rhizomatic networks, established a framework in which concentrated structural systems support a larger whole. This approach informed both the tower’s organization and its capacity to integrate atmospheric water harvesting, storage, and purification.

As the design progressed, the project increasingly drew from natural systems and life forms adapted to arid climates. The fog-basking Onymacris unguicularis, the Saguaro cactus, and termite mounds that regulate airflow through chimney-like formations informed strategies for capturing wind and creating optimal conditions for water harvesting. These biological precedents were complemented by mechanical inspiration, particularly the finned structure of a motorcycle radiator, which efficiently channels air to regulate temperature. Together, these influences shaped a system in which wind moves passively through and around the tower’s surfaces, maximizing exposure of the atmospheric water generators without requiring active redirection of airflow.

Formal experimentation through sketch models led to a refinement of both structure and spatial organization. The tower ultimately developed as a kit of parts: a set of cores and a series of horizontal floor plates that extend outward to support urban farming, increasing surface area and enhancing environmental performance. While early iterations explored multiple cores, the system was simplified to emphasize clarity and efficiency. A continuous skin wraps the structure, guiding air, protecting occupants, and acting as both environmental mediator and secondary structural layer. This skin forms tunnels, programmable spaces, and surfaces for water absorption and release, while also producing moments of accumulation, called osases, distributed throughout the tall building.

These oases introduce a perceptual dimension to the project. As water gathers and interacts with light and surface, the tower begins to read as a floating form. At the base, where the skin lifts to reveal exposed floor plates, reflective surfaces create mirage-like effects, blurring the boundary between structure and site. The tower is further embedded within its site through subtle manipulations of topography, shaping entry points and creating sheltered outdoor environments.

Ultimately, the project operates as a layered system: a structural kit of parts, an environmental skin, and a responsive part of a broader ecosystem. It seeks to reconcile natural intelligence with deliberate design, producing a tower that is at once infrastructural and atmospheric, a highly ordered yet seemingly organic hub for human comfort within an arid landscape.

Flex Sleeve is a wearable compression device designed for the calf, often referred to as the "second heart" due to its role in aiding blood circulation. Developed in collaboration with URI Soft Matter Lab, this project explores the potential of Liquid Crystal Elastomers (LCEs) in creating soft, responsive, and personalized medical wearables.
At the core of this project is a working experiment that mimics human physiology: two LCE strips were wrapped around a water-filled balloon connected to a vertical tube. When heat is applied, the LCEs contract, compressing the balloon and pushing water upward, an analogy for how calf muscles support blood flow back to the heart. This experiment laid the foundation for developing a real-world application of LCE-based actuation in compression therapy.
Why LCEs? These smart materials are soft, stretchable, and can generate thermally-driven actuation within skin-tolerant ranges – approximately 70°C today, with a pathway towards less than 50°C in the future. Their flexibility makes them ideal for wearable applications. When integrated with embedded copper coils and sensors, the LCE actuators provide tailored compression, adapting in real time to the user’s physiological needs to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
Flex Sleeve features:
Three LCE actuators along the back of the sleeve, each independently responding to areas needing more or less compression.
Smart compression routines are powered by an internal system, allowing users to program timing and intensity based on activity levels—faster compression during ambulation and mobility, and lower-intensity cycles for resting and seated periods.
A rechargeable, stretchable battery by J.Flex, designed to move seamlessly with the sleeve and user.
Unobtrusive, user-friendly design that eliminates the stigma of traditional medical compression wear that is visually soft, lightweight, and easy to wear using a wrap-around velcro system.
Flex Sleeve merges user-centered design, aesthetics, medical function, and personalized software to deliver a smarter and more personal experience. By tailoring pressure dynamically through sensor feedback and programmable routines, this wearable promotes better circulation, muscle recovery, and everyday comfort.

LCE Artificial Muscles

This experiment seeks to learn how variation in the position of a heat source, creating inconsistency in the rate at which Liquid Crystal Elastomer (LCE) strips contract, will affect the movement of a ring attached to the LCE Strips.Three equal length LCE Strips are connected to a rigid circular ring at equal angles from the center, with the radius of the circle equal to the activated (short) length of the strips, creating a downward angle when the strips are in their unactivated (long) length. When the strips are activated, they contract, causing the ring to be pulled upward, decreasing the angle of the strips. The same experiment is run with LCE Strips containing carbon black.
The experiment finds that when the heat source is a small heat gun, and the heat is directed towards only towards one strip, there is minimal effect on the movement of the ring: factors that influence this result include the size of the heated air blown onto the LCE, and inconsistency in the experiment construction causing certain strips to be more prone to react to the heat to begin with.&#38;nbsp;

Findings
Clear LCE sample snapped at 40%, 35%, 30%, 20% strain when attempting to cure; succeeded at 10% Carbon Black LCE sample snapped at 30% strain when attempting to cure; succeed at 20%
Clear LCE: after 3 thermal cycles a final strain of 7% was achieved, making a fixity of ~ 70% Carbon Black LCE: after 4 thermal cycles a final strain of 4.6% was achieved, making a fixity of ~ 23%
Strategies for heating to prevent snapping included adding a silicone pad “buffer” between rigid clamp edge and LCE to decrease the acute edge force on the LCE surface
Strategies for activating the cured LCE strips included visually observing the surface finish of the LCE (becomes obviously more shiny when activated), which was found to be a more effective indicator of activation rather than monitoring temperature

SMP Multifunctional Hook

Creator: Zejun (Jeff) Wang

Supervisor: Peter Yeadon

This project focuses on the design of a multifunctional hook made of Shape Memory Polymer (SMP) smart materials that are thermoresponsive. The main idea is to create a reusable attachment device that can grip onto many kinds of surfaces and objects without drilling, adhesives, or permanent hardware. By applying heat, the SMP arms become soft and deformable, allowing it to be shaped onto a surface/object. As the SMP arms cool down, the arms harden and the hook is ready to use. However, later, the arms can be reheated in order to have them return to their original shape, and to be used again.
The hook would be built with SMP claws that include embedded heating wires for even warming and softening. To ensure comfort and safety, a rubber insulation layer would block heat from the inner parts, and additional design elements would support both function and safety: copper contact points for steady electrical connection, a temperature control chip to avoid overheating, a USB Type-C port for easy charging, and a thermochromic coating that shows when the material has cooled and is safe to handle. A hook adapter allows users to swap between different hook sizes, making the product more versatile.
Several prototypes were tested to find the best structure. The six-claw gripping structure proved the most effective. Early versions showed gaps when holding thinner objects, but later iterations reduced the central area, and added grooves for flexibility. A medium hook (1.5 inches long, 0.4 inches in diameter) was tested with loads up to 2 kg. At the weight limit, deformation appeared, but the hook did not detach even after two hours. Recovery tests confirmed that the claws could reliably return to their original form after heating and cooling cycles.
The SMP Multifunctional Hook’s smart materials enable the product to be adaptable, reusable, and safe. Its ability to attach to edges, rods, and irregular objects makes it different from conventional hooks or clamps. Because it avoids permanent installation and surface damage, it also offers a more sustainable alternative. The design could be improved by optimizing energy efficiency and exploring modular extensions for specific uses, such as travel or outdoor activities. There is also potential to integrate sensors for monitoring loads or usage cycles.
